Obrigada Lisboa

Saturday, November 6, 2010

We found ourselves without a place to stay in Madrid so with our ever-growing weighty backpacks we decided to jump on an overnight train and head straight to Portugal. After 9 painstaking, I wanna shoot myself in the foot hours, we arrived in Lisbon. Note to self: if ever deciding to take that long of a train ride ever again, pay the extra euros for a sleeping cabin!!! What a change of scenery, maybe it was due to exhaustion but we made our way along the slippery and empty streets of the Baixa before 8am finally to our hostel that was kind enough to let us chill on their couches while waiting to check in. By far the coolest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Well it was quite the adventure around Lisbon, as we had to adjust to the change from Spanish to Portuguese, non-the-less the people were really kind to us. I knew the city was comprised of many hills, but jeez they sure are hard to navigate up and around after a couple bottles of wine! They make it easy to get around though with their several options of transportation whether you take a street car, tram or elevador. We went out west to Belem our first day and I couldn’t help but to feel privileged that I happened to be standing on the precise point where Vasco de Gamma first sailed off on his adventure to seek what was out beyond the horizon. At night we found ourselves wandering around the Bairro Alto but unfortunately nightlife doesn’t come alive until well after midnight. We did manage to make friends with some Portuguese sailors but that’s a whole other story. Another great place to wander aimlessly is Alfama. We definitely got lost but it was one of the best little adventures! We discovered so many great little places and even caught some free live Fado! Our last night we hiked up through a secret little garden and chilled out in a beautiful park that over looked the whole city, while feasting on our usual treats and watched the sunset. Soon enough we were overwhelmed with the magic of Lisbon as the mass of city lights lit up all around us. Before we left the city we grabbed a bottle of Port, which must not be passed up!
